Solved. Even though I had deleted the firmware files from within DSView - they physically remained on the disk. (....dsview4\data\files\) I deleted the two huge - 900+ mb .fr files from the directory, and now my backups are reduced to under 400mb. As for updating UMG firmware in the future, I plan to use the UMG gui's.
