Forum Post: Problems installing the avctviewerplugin.msi with Firefox
So I am trying to login to a target device using dsview 4 from Firefox in a Windows 7 box. I first let it download the avctviewerplugin.msi file and try to run it. And when I tried to connect to the target device, dsview wanted to download and install the plugin. Note that according to Windows, the plugin has been installed, but as far as firefox is concerned, no plugin was installed. Next option was manual install. After backing up the plugins directory, I followed the instructions in the wiki entry on Manually installing avctviewerplugin.msi and Firefox and put the contents of that .msi file into the Firecox plugin file (talk about clutter). And then restarted firefox for good measure and tried again to fondle the target device. Once again it wanted to download and install avctviewerplugin.msi . What should I try next?

Wiki Page: ACS, Maximum cable length of CAT5 for target device connection
Inquiry: What is the maximum cable length of CAT5 for target device connection in ACS? Resolution: It is the same RS232 serial specification. RS-232 RS-232 is simple, universal, well understood and supported everywhere. However, it has some serious shortcomings as an electrical interface. Firstly, the interface presupposes a common ground between the DTE and DCE. This is a reasonable assumption where a short cable connects a DTE and DCE in the same room, but with longer lines and connections between devices that may be on different electrical busses, this may not be true. We have seen some spectacular electrical events causes by "uncommon grounds". Secondly, a signal on a single line is impossible to screen effectively for noise. By screening the entire cable one can reduce the influence of outside noise, but internally generated noise remains a problem. As the baud rate and line length increase, the effect of capacitance between the cables introduces serious crosstalk until a point is reached where the data itself is unreadable. Crosstalk can be reduced by using low capacitance cable. Also, as it is the higher frequencies that are the problem, control of slew rate in the signal (i.e., making the signal more rounded, rather than square) also decreases the crosstalk. The original specifications for RS-232 had no specification for maximum slew rate. The standards for RS-232 and similar interfaces usually restrict RS-232 to 20kbps or less and line lengths of 15m (50 ft) or less. These restrictions are mostly throwbacks to the days when 20kbps was considered a very high line speed, and cables were thick, with high capacitance. However, in practice, RS-232 is far more robust than the traditional specified limits of 20kbps over a 15m line would imply. Most 56kbps DSUs are supplied with both V.35 and RS-232 ports because RS-232 is perfectly adequate at speeds up to 200kbps. The 15m limitation for cable length can be stretched to about 30m for ordinary cable, if well screened and grounded, and about 100m if the cable is low capacitance as well. Data Rate (bps) Maximum Cable Length 57,600 or less 30m/100 feet 115,200 25m/80 feet 230,400 13m/40 feet 460,800 6m/20 feet 921,600 3m/10 feet

File: Submitting an RMA Request to Avocent® Technical Support
Problem This document provides general information that is required when submitting cases to Technical Support. Solution To resolve issues as soon as possible, please include the following information when submitting a support case. Repair/Replacement (RMA) request for Hardware Product Avocent® Technical Support offers repair or replacement service for hardware defects that are included in the hardware warranty policy. Prior to submitting an RMA request for hardware equipment, please make sure the following checklist has been performed. Avocent Technical Support does not accept an RMA request unless all information is provided. NOTE: Avocent Technical Support provides you with an official RMA number only after all troubleshooting is completed and the RMA request (required to identify the hardware issue) is approved. Do not ship the faulty unit without an RMA number. Required Product/Environmental Information Product part number, serial number and firmware version. Type of environment, such as a rack (in a data center, small lab or server room), on a desktop and so on. Physical connection diagram that can be used to reproduce the issue. Typical ambient temperature running. Where the product was installed, such as in a rack, on a desktop and so on. Type of power source, such as PDU, UPS, office outlet, used voltage, phase, grounding and so on. Required Problem Description Actual behavior (issue). How often does the issue happen? For example, is it 100% reproducible or once every 10 minutes? Minimum steps to reproduce the issue, and at which step the actual error is displayed. Any evidence files to show the actual behavior, such as screenshots, photos, video, LED status and log files with a time stamp, or anything that will help us identify the hardware issue. If the issue occurs only when integrating with other products or occurs as a standalone product. If the issue is reproducible with the latest firmware version. If the issue is reproducible after a factory default reset. Expected behavior. Reference used for the expected behavior, such as the user guide, data sheet, tech note and so on. Required General Information Date you purchased the product with proof of purchase. Date you installed the product. Date you found the issue and what prior event initiated the issue, such as a power outage. If the issue was due to a failed firmware upgrade. Troubleshooting attempted and its result (see the following General Troubleshooting section). Any temporary workarounds (step-by-step). For critical issues, how many back up appliance units are available for your environment. General Troubleshooting If the product fails to boot up, perform the following and provide the results: o Do you see any output or boot message from the local console port during boot? o Using the provided power cable (in the box of the appliance), ensure all the power cables of the connected appliances or target devices are grounded properly. o Connect the power cable to the appliance securely, detach all cables except the power cable and boot it up to verify if the issue happens in a minimum setup. o Verify the power LED illuminates properly when turning on the appliance. o Verify the internal fan condition and if the fan starts working when you turn on the appliance. o Verify the kind of power cable you are using and what happens when you swap the power cable/supply. o Verify the kind of power source it is and what happens when you change the power source (PDU or UPS). If the product is inaccessible after booting up (Local Port/Serial Console Port/Ethernet Port Connectivity issue), perform the following and provide the results: o Check if any customized cables or non-supported conversion adapters/devices are not connected. o Check the serial console port access with proper terminal setting. o Check the port LED status. o Check the direct connection to the problem port (without patch panel or firewall). If the target device (appliance) is inaccessible, perform the following and provide the results: o Verify the target device is accessible with a direct connection and without the Avocent appliance. Try rebooting the appliance. Try the hardware reset button (if applicable). Try Flash Recovery or Network boot (loading the same firmware version to flash again). Try the factory default reset. Others (Avocent Technical Support may request further troubleshooting).

Forum Post: ACS6000 Series When performing a firmware upgrade 3.1.0.8 Default Gateway is lost
Good Morning we had several issues upgrading to the new firmware first is that the Default Gateway does not seem to be set once the console is rebooted. the configuration shows it in https and cli but not until it is changed and set back it gets set. it has happened twice in local avocent devices. the issue is that we have many in remote unmanned locations. Second the root password recovery procedure does not seem to work through console. when entering the passwd in single mode it gives a message of successful but it does not take the password. I am not sure if that is because the original configuration is set up with radius_down_local. and it tries first, which is problematic as the device does not have a gateway set up. we work around it by putting a computer in the network and ssh to it and set the password. but again most of our devices are in remote areas with no available workstations. is there a step previous the upgrade to ensure the default gateway is not lost. Thanks
